Important EXD Learning
Contract Policies
Academic Misconduct
Academic misconduct by students includes all acts of dishonesty
in any academically-related matter and any knowing or intentional
help or attempt to help, or conspiracy to help, another student
commit an act of academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty includes,
but is not limited to, each of the following acts when performed
in any type of academic or academically-related matter, exercise,
or activity:
a) Cheating--using or attempting to use unauthorized materials,
information, study aids, or computer-related information.
b) Plagiarism--representing the words, data, works, ideas, computer
program or output, or anything not generated in an authorized
fashion, as one's own.
c) Fabrication--presenting as genuine any invented or falsified
citation or material.
d) Misrepresentation--falsifying, altering, or misstating the
contents of documents or other materials related to academic
matters, including schedules, prerequisites, and transcripts.
If there exists reasonable cause to believe a student has engaged
in an act of academic misconduct, EXD shall report the matter
to the A&S divisional academic conduct monitor (appointed
by the academic dean). EXD will take no other action in the matter
until a decision has been reached by the monitor or the dean.
A copy of the full academic misconduct policy is available on
the web at: http://www.ua.edu/academic/facsen/handbook/append-c.html.
Disability Accommodation
Procedures and services for students with learning and physical
disabilities now are standardized through the Office of Disability
Services (ODS, 101/111 Osband, 348-4285), a unit within the Center
for Teaching and Learning. If you are seeking accommodations
because of a disability, you must contact the Office for Disability
Services at The University of Alabama, prior to enrolling in
any learning contract.
Contract Drop Policy
The following contract withdrawal policy applies to contracts
enrolled beginning Fall 2001:
A student may withdraw from a learning contract within 30 days
of the contract’s enrollment and receive a full tuition
refund and not be subject to academic penalty.
All EXD students must complete a contract within one year, unless
a different contract completion time is specified.
A student may withdraw from a learning contract within 2/3 of
the contract completion time without academic penalty. No tuition
will be refunded if the drop occurs after 30 days.
A student may not withdraw from a learning contract after 2/3
of the contract completion time.
The “EXD Writing Skills and Strategies” and “Basic
College Writing” contract may not be withdrawn and are
excluded from this policy.
Contract Completion Policy
Beginning with the Fall 2001 semester, all incomplete learning
contracts, which carry a grade of IP, that have been enrolled
for over a year, will automatically convert to an “F” at
the end of the following year’s semester. This action will
be administered in accordance with University policy and will
be carried out by the UA’s Office of Records. This automatic
grade conversion will be done without any notification to the
contract director or student.
Academic Grievance
A student academic grievance is broadly defined as a student
complaint regarding an academic action taken by instructional
or administrative personnel at The University of Alabama. An
academic grievance may be filed by a student against University
personnel including instructional personnel, administrators,
or staff members at the University. Examples of academic grievances
include, but are not limited to, allegations of unfairness in
grading, alleged violation of a written or oral agreement with
a student (e.g., course requirements for graduation), and alleged
inconsistent applications of existing policies. A copy of the
University-Wide Academic Grievance Procedures is available on
the web at http://www.ua.edu/academic/facsen/handbook/append-d.html
