Important Contract Policies

Purpose

To introduce students to the Social Sciences, their methods, and the major areas of study.

Learning Objectives
  1. Students will learn why the Social Sciences are a necessary part of a comprehensive education.
  2. Students will become aware of what the Social Sciences are and what contributions constitute the various methodologies of the Social Sciences.
  3. Students will become familiar with the current major areas studied by the different Social Sciences.
  4. Students will learn why the study of contemporary society is a good and basic introduction to the Social Sciences.
Methodology
  1. The students will read the required text.
  2. The students will do a summary outline for each chapter in the text. At the completion of each chapter, a summary outline for that chapter should be completed. At the completion of each 3 chapters, the summary outlines should be submitted to the instructor. Additional specific information will be forthcoming after the contract is enrolled.
  3. The students will write a final paper, integrating their knowledge and understanding of the Social Sciences. This final paper will be worked out with the instructor and will be arranged toward the end of the contract time and may well be specific to a specified number of chapters or integrative of the entire book. This, too, will be worked out in detail with the instructor after the contract has been enrolled and after some early feedback is given on the chapter summary outlines.

The textbook for this contract will be: Elgrin P. Hunt and David C. Colander, Social Science: An Introduction to the Study of Society, 11th ed. Allyn and Baaron, 2002. ISBN 0-205-28161-3.

Evaluation
  1. Each summary outline will be graded for content and understanding and returned to the student after grading.
  2. The final essay will be graded for successfully integrating the content.
  3. The final grade will be: Summary Outline = 75% Final Essay = 25%
