Important Contract Policies
Purpose
To become familiar with local history of a community by studying
its cemeteries.
Learning Objectives
- To become familiar with the inventorying of cemeteries
- To become familiar with grave marker art
- To become familiar with burial patterns of ethnic and racial groups
- To learn about graveyard folklore
Methodology
- Students will use the assigned manual to inventory cemeteries
and to complete assigned projects that are part of the evaluation.
- Read the assigned texts.
Resources
- Consult local libraries and historical societies to determine what previous
records of cemeteries are already available and to consult these people to
locate cemeteries.
- Work with the Contract Director in every stage of the project to insure a
quality inventory and field study.
- Use the Guide/Manual, Cemeteries and Local History, for the course. This
manual is available as an online course reserve. Go to http://www.lib.ua.edu,

Evaluation - Complete an inventory of selected graveyards (500 or so stones).
- Complete a field study of graveyards inventoried by producing a summary of 15-20 pgs.
- Use writing guide of choice.
