Important Contract Policies

Learning Objectives

I will improve my understanding and appreciation of several art forms
  1. Increase my visual literacy.
  2. Increase my ability to listen to and understand classical music.
  3. Increase my knowledge of the theatre.
  4. Improve my ability to evaluate artistic events.
Methodology
  1. Visual Arts
      a) Read and write a detailed chapter by chapter analysis of John Canaday's What is Art?.
      b) Visit and report on the collection of a major museum in my area (or to which I can travel).
      c) Visit and report on at least 2 other art shows (galleries, small museums, good quality craft shows, etc.).
  2. Music
      a) Research the lives and works of at least 2 composers (either modern or pre-twentieth century).
      b) Study and report on at least 1 musical form (e.g., the symphony) and 1 instrument.
      c) Attend and analyze at least 3 classical music concerts.
  3. Theater
      a) Study the life, times, and works of at least 1 playwright.
      b) Read at least 2 plays by the writer.
      c) Attend and analyze at least 3 live theater productions with attention to staging, acting, directing, text, and overall quality.
Resources
  1. John Canaday, What is Art? New York: Knopf, 1980.
  2. Book-length studies on the lives and works of 2 composers; audio samples of their compositions.
  3. A book-length study of a playwright, providing background information on the life, times, and works of the writer for a sense of context (it would be good to verify your choices with the contract director); 2 full-length plays.
  4. Resource persons might be practicing artists, musicians, community and professional theater persons, museum and arts council members and administrators in your community.
  5. Art events, concerts, museums and galleries, theater performances.
Evaluation
  1. Written papers on the art history text, What is Art?, papers on 2 composers, paper on the playwright and plays.
  2. Journal containing critical analyses of all events attended--3 in the visual arts, 3 concerts, or recitals, and 3 plays. (In some circumstances, with prior approval by the contract director, pre-recorded or television shows may be substituted for live performances.
