Important Contract Policies
Purpose
This contract assumes students are competent writers and merely
need to "brush up" on syntax, paragraph development,
and thematic patterning. Students' writing is evaluated for
skill development, improvement in mechanical and analytical
skills, and technical and conceptual maturity.
Learning Objectives
- I will work on the mechanics of syntax (sentence organization), paragraph development, and thematic patterning.
- I will learn to develop a point of view and learn how to express it.
- I will learn techniques of exposition appropriate to a short research essay.
*Each writing assignment must be evaluated and returned before the next is undertaken.
Methodology
- The first writing exercise will be a detailed description
of the space in which I spend most of my time, e.g., office,
kitchen, workshop, etc. I will include recommendations of how
to improve that space (2-3 pgs.).*
- The second assignment will be to compose a letter to the editor
of a local newspaper, arguing a position on a problem or issue
of current interest.
- he last exercise will be a short (3-5 pgs.) research paper
on an area of interest or expertise, to be composed in 3 stages:
a) Outline, b) Draft, c) Finished Paper. Submit a, b, and c together.
*Source materials MUST be documented either by notes or parenthetical references in the text. Example: (Brown, p. 56). This includes paraphrase as well as direct quotes. Include a list of works cited.
*Student will receive a "go-ahead" letter from the EXD office after the contract has been approved. It is then the student's responsibility to send the first assignment to Dr. Parker.
Resources
- Contract Director
- Grammar/composition textbooks, if assigned (books are not necessarily needed).

separately and in concert.
