Purpose
The overall purpose of this course is to introduce the beginning
student to the fundamentals of creative writing (primarily
fiction) through a series of reading assignments and writing
exercises.
Learning Objectives
- To introduce the beginning student to the fundamental concepts of creative writing (primarily fiction), i.e., setting, characterization, dialogue, suspense techniques, flashbacks, point of view, etc.
- To equip the student with a vocabulary for discussing/critiquing the creative writing of others as well as his/her own work.
- To provide the beginning student with the necessary skills to write a poem or short story.
Methodology
- The contract will include reading the assigned lessons in the
text as well as any other suggested readings (see Resources).
- Telephone conversations with the Contract Director for discussion
and assessment as needed, or email.
Resources
- Text: Introduction to Creative Writing, by Richard Dice. This is available
at http://www.lib.ua.edu. Click on “course reserves” and select “Richard
Dice.” Note: this documentl is in pdf format. You will need to download
Adobe’s free reader at http://www.adobe.com. If you need help, please
call us at (205)348-6000.
- There will also be a suggested reading list; these are sources mentioned
in the text.
Evaluation
- Written responses to a series of 12 exercises. The student
need only complete 10. If the student chooses to do all 12
exercises, the 10 best will be chosen in figuring the final
grade. Each exercise will be given a grade and will be returned
to the student with comments. In submitting the exercises,
the student is strongly advised to submit one at a time. This
will allow the Contract Director to evaluate the student's
progress, and since the exercises build on each other, the
student can avoid making the same mistake twice. Please include
a self-addressed, stamped envelope (or email).
- Telephone conversations with
the student that elaborate upon things said in the Contract
Director's commentary, or in response to student questions
regarding that commentary.
